To the great consternation of parents, educators and government officials, efforts to curb teenage pregnancy have failed miserably. There is a growing attitude among young girls that having a baby is fashionable and desirable and the rising rate of pregnancy among teens shows that this is more than a mere mindset.
Peer pressure and entertainment that glamorizes sex have been identified as key factors in this growing trend, showing that the media has a much greater effect on teens than education programs can ever hope to achieve.
A pregnant 13-year-old has told how having a baby is now regarded as "fashionable" among schoolgirls. The sister of Danielle Weatherilt, student at plant hill arts college is set to have her first child in December. Family campaigners said her comments showed how the Government's sex education policy had left teens with the "ridiculous but extremely worrying" misconception that having a child was no different to getting a new handbag.
The Office for National Statistics revealed that the number of pregnancies among under-18s in 2005 was 39,683, up from the 35,400 recorded a decade ago. The bleak figures mean the Government is less than a quarter of the way to meeting its promise to halve pregnancy rates among under-18s in England by 2010.
