Combating Cyberbullying Edit
Liskula Cohen's Landmark Lawsuit Unmasks Vitriolic Blogger

The now defunct blog “Skanks in NYC” has been the subject of much controversy since a comment made by the blog’s owner became the subject of a legal dispute. The anonymous blog writer wrote that Canadian Vogue model Liskula Cohen deserves the first place award for being the biggest skank in NYC.

Liskula Cohen filed a suit against the blogger and the Google-owned blog was taken down. That, however, was not good enough for Cohen, who charged that she is a victim of cyberbullying and therefore is entitled to know the identity of the blogger in order to move on with her life.

A judge has granted Liskula Cohen’s request and this precedent-setting battle opens the door for any celebrity who feels they are the victim of cyberbullying to actively prosecute and unmask anonymous bloggers—even if the comments were only made in jest or taken out of their original context.

I wonder what Liskula Cohen plans on using her new found information for. Perhaps for revenge? Or something equally as immature as the anonymous blogger has done? Anonymous gossipy bloggers everywhere will be sleeping a little less soundly tonight, I suspect.

In a case with potentially far-reaching repercussions, Liskula Cohen sought the identity of the blogger who maligned her on the Skanks in NYC blog so that she could sue him or her for defamation. (timesonline)

Some argue that criticism comes with the job for celebrities and other high-profile figures, but I don't think anyone asks for defamation. It isn't legal in the print world, and it's only a matter of time before laws catch up to the Internet too.

In many cases horrible problems have been avoided for the community as a result of anonymous blogging. This includes whistleblowing for white-collar criminals, community awareness when sexual predators move into the neighborhood, and many other alerts that are of great community benefit. Benefits notwithstanding, you can't make an omelette without breaking eggs and anonymous free speech on the Internet is one such omlette. There is no such thing as free speech, there is always a cost. Sometimes that cost is acceptable, moreover desirable, particularly in the case of positive community awareness. But often their many false and deceptive rumors, and libelous attacks are motivated only by hatred and vindictive antisocial promptings. More often than not, these serial cyber defamers have some type of antisocial personality disorder. They have nothing better to do than hurt other people, in fact they are actually fueled by other people's pain. Normal people like 97% of the readers of my comment cannot begin to relate to how these people think. Stop for a moment and imagine not having a conscience..... is simply impossible. A concerted, focused and malicious Internet smear campaign can be as devastating for a person that relies on his or her reputation for employment as a fire can be for a farmer who loses his fields, barns, and livestock.
