Pixelated Masks

Campaign for Anonymous Tips

— June 11, 2008 — Marketing
I love this digital pixelated mask promotional marketing piece emphasizing anonymity. Created by MPM Propaganda for Anonymous Tip, the ads imply the organization lets "you call and tip-off with absolute anonymity."

The item was distributed in unprivileged communities where people withhold information about crimes for fear of retaliation. The simple yet effective approach speaks to them directly with information printed on the insides of the mask encouraging them to call and give tips in complete anonymity.

The campaign was created by MPM Propaganda Advertising Agency, Belo Horizonte, Brazil with creative director Augusto Coelho, art director Bruno Ramos, copywriter Guilherme Araujo, and photography of this print ad by Image Bank.
Trend Themes
1. Anonymity Advocacy - Similar campaigns emphasizing anonymity may arise in the future to encourage people to speak out or report crimes in hostile communities.
2. Digital Marketing Merchandise - As companies look for unique and eye-catching merchandising products, digital pixelated mask products may increasingly be seen as a viable option to raise awareness about products or services in the future.
3. Community-specific Marketing - The success of the pixelated mask campaign highlights the potential success for community-specific marketing in the future, as a means of engaging with hard-to-reach groups without swamping them with mainstream advertising.
Industry Implications
1. Public Safety - Technology that preserves anonymity may become increasingly useful in fighting crime and other public safety-related issues.
2. Advertising and Marketing - Use of a new mode of marketing via unique merchandising concepts such as pixelated masks may be seen as an effective means of promotion in the future.
3. Non-governmental Organizations (ngos) - Groups operating in difficult, conflict-affected areas struggling to engage with the wider community may learn from this campaign to create innovative local tactics that are relatable to the grassroots.
