Lately it seems like virtually everyone is perusing some kind of diet, or on a “clean eating” spree. The GLUTEN-FREE diet particularly has been on the rise in past years. GLUTEN-FREE diets are flaunted by celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Victoria Beckham. Also, more and more restaurants are offering gluten-free options due to the high demand.
For those who have celiac disease, this is great news. However, there is much controversy surrounding whether or not a gluten-free diet is all that beneficial for non-celiacs’. The gluten protein most often found in wheat and other grains, can cause the immune system to attack the lining of the small intestine. Despite the perceived pros and cons, surely cutting out a small portion of gluten from a healthy diet can’t hurt.
Implications - There are many popular diet trends and fads that are buzz worthy, but it’s important to recognize the most popular and prevalent one- the gluten free diet. Interest groups who would benefit from reading my article are: Restaurant Chains and Companies, Chefs, Restauranteurs, Foodies,Personal Trainers, Food Industry. Recognizing that there is a large market and demand for Gluten-Free products and goods is important for those in the Food Industry and Food Sales. Gluten-Free is a trend that isn’t fading away anytime soon. There are a large number of Celiacs in North America, who are going to need accommodation for the rest of their lives arguably. Therefore, Celiacs alone create a market for Gluten-Free products, combined with those who participate in the Gluten- Free diet for weight loss, etc.
