This renewable energy keynote by Van Jones answers the question: is a shift away from oil dependency possible in the next 50 to 100 years?
Although Jones acknowledges the importance of oil use to the United States (and world) economy, he says that if it came down to it the answer is yes. Jones points to two sources of renewable power that can be harnessed in great quantities in the United States. First, he points to the sunbelt of the southern United States as a "Saudi Arabia of solar" and the plain states of the country as a "Saudi Arabia of wind." The challenge, as he sees it, is to gather energy in the middle of the country via these sources and transfer it to the population centers without losing too much energy. In order for this to happen, Jones says there has to be breakthroughs in hyper-conductive power lines and battery technology.
