Although Communist and Capitalist ideals differ in almost every way imaginable, LIFE Magazine’s display of philosophically contrived architecture demonstrates some similarities between the two opposing camps.
The 37 photographs of Communist and Capitalist designs conjure up visions of Cold War diplomacy and 21st century innovation all at once. In addition to the tribute that these images pay to an age old source of division, the structures also provide a welcome reminder that theories may inform architecture. In the midst of politically minded discourse, this is a reality that can be easily overlooked.
What is most interesting about these designs is that while some are readily identifiable as either Communist or Capitalist, others are more difficult to decipher. With evident overlaps in architecture, this spread suggests that on a constructional level, Communists and Capitalists may be compatible.
