Co-founder and executive director of the Sunlight Foundation Ellen Miller reimagines the government in this Transparency Keynote looking towards a more open nation. Believing that the government is only as powerful as its citizens are informed, Miller sees a more open and resourceful government. Currently, there is a scarcity and control of information available to citizens, yet with the digital revolution there is an ability to help create a proactive government.
The smart use of technology can encourage a prosperous civic life. Open data provides a means help new economies develop in both the private and public sectors. Inventions such as the GPS system was created through the reliance of NASA satellites. This sharing of information allows for new public/private entreprises that makes government information useful. Another example is the creation of apps that help citizens report pot holes or graffiti to local governments and let people follow live updates on what is being done.
By providing information and encouraging transparency, governments can flourish on the sharing of data and build better communities. This openness will create responsive governments who can efficiently and effectively use public resources and deliver services.
