Nakia J White's Female Political Involvement Speech Examines Reaction

Nakia J. White examines the critical reception of two well-known female political figures in her female political involvement speech. In her first example, she discusses the media coverage that Hillary Clinton received when she ran against Barack Obama in 2008. Clinton was subject to reports that commented on her "haggard" looks, speculated on whether she wore make-up, and dubbed her the "pantsuit candidate."
Similarly, when Sarah Palin entered the mainstream media consciousness in 2012, the newspapers also focused on her looks; but this time, the reports commented on how attractive she was and speculated how much her wardrobe cost. Her political acheivements were more or less erased.
White notes that, whereas Clinton distanced herself from the title of "woman," Palin embraced it, but was given a pre-packaged voice that often came across as unnatural. White's advice would be to know your own voice, brand and ideology, without shying away from your identifier as a woman.
