Win Wallace Melds Tribal Garb with Western Wear in These Images

It’s hard to pinpoint the ethnicity of the subjects in these Win Wallace paintings, but that’s kind of the point. The Austin, Texas-based artist is greatly inspired by his Southern heritage and explores history and spirituality simultaneously through his work by melding together both things in each of his renderings. The result is images that aren’t easily classifiable as viewers are readily able to identify certain cultural motifs, but are perplexed by their anachronistic existence within portrait.

Win Wallace also often incorporates animals into his renderings that seem out of place, giving tribesmen puppies, Victorian era women vulture companions and regal Europeans deer heads clutched within their hands. His paintings are a flurry of cultures blended together, inviting viewers to confront their presupposed notions about each group of people.
