Wi‑Fi Patent Licensing Deals

HP Has Signed Huawei WiFi Patent License Agreement

HP announced a multi-year global license for certain Wi-Fi patents from Huawei, covering standard-essential technology used across connected devices. HP described the agreement as a routine licensing arrangement rather than a broader commercial partnership, following a patent dispute over the company’s use of Huawei’s Wi-Fi intellectual property.

The deal follows an earlier agreement involving the Sisvel WiFi 6 patent pool, which includes roughly 2,000 patents related to wireless connectivity and counts Huawei among its founding members. HP said it pursued the latest license after Huawei sued the company, leaving it to either secure licensing rights or continue litigation. The arrangement also includes reciprocal patent rights from HP.

For consumers, the agreement helps reduce the risk of disruption to HP’s Wi-Fi-enabled products while supporting continued use of industry-standard wireless technology. The deal also highlights the role of patent licensing and cross-licensing in maintaining global hardware compatibility.
