Qualcomm Signs Viettel To Its 6G Early Access Program

Qualcomm and Viettel High Tech announced a 6G Early Access Program partnership, with Viettel leading research, integration, manufacturing and testing of base stations while Qualcomm supplies the chipset platform and development tools. The companies are targeting a pre-commercial 6G call in early 2029 and are extending a 5G Open RAN collaboration that began in 2022.

The agreement also includes plans to expand Viettel’s Qualcomm-based 5G equipment into Southeast Asia, South Asia, Africa and Latin America. Qualcomm will introduce Viettel to operators and partners in those regions, while Viettel provides the radio products and deployment expertise. The companies will also test Viettel equipment against Qualcomm’s platform under real operating conditions.

For operators, the partnership could create another RAN supplier option in markets dominated by Huawei, ZTE, Ericsson and Nokia. Its longer-term impact will depend on whether Viettel can convert the collaboration into commercial orders outside Vietnam.
