TAO Designs the Weishan Chongzheng Academy Bookstore

Chinese design studio Trace Architecture Office has taken on a special renovation project of a historic building in Yunnan, China to provide a space for the Weishan Chongzheng Academy Bookstore. The refreshed space retains the historic element as it dates back over 500 years -- it was created for the bookstore chain Librairie Avant-Garde.

Sheng Zhong, associate at TAO speaks to Dezeen about the design, noting "Chongzheng Academy was one of the first academies in the history of Yunnan and boasted the most extensive collection of books in the region. To preserve a wealth of historical information such as colourful paintings, inscriptions, and stone carvings from different periods to the fullest extent possible, we established three principles of 'safety, reversibility, and distinguishability'."
