DOCa Rioja Introduced Viñedos Singulares Classification

The European Union approved DOCa Rioja’s viñedos singulares, a formal geographical indication for single-vineyard sites, recognizing the Consejo Regulador’s rule changes designed to spotlight terroir. The decision, enacted at an EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting, codified Spanish ministerial decrees issued in 2023–2025 and updated minimum alcohol thresholds for several Rioja categories, including specific levels for Crianza and Reserva wines.

The regulation builds on earlier Rioja reforms that created the vinedos singulares category in 2017 and later expanded village-level labeling from Vino de Municipio to Vino de Pueblo, increasing officially recognized pueblos to 164. It also clarified alcohol minimums for wines intended for quality sparkling and still white production and set distinct floors for barrel-aged red classifications.

For consumers and producers, the move makes origin and micro-terroir more legible on labels, helping buyers identify site-specific wines and supporting a broader trend toward provenance-driven premiumization in wine. Greater label granularity may shift purchasing toward producers emphasizing vineyard identity.
