Enhanced Authentication Features

WhatsApp Strengthened Its Two-Step Verification and Passkeys

WhatsApp introduced an upgraded suite of account protections, featuring a stronger two-step verification system that now supports full passwords with letters, numbers and special characters. The update also expands passkey support, allowing users to register more than one passkey across Android and iOS devices for faster account access without relying on one-time codes or PINs.

On Android, WhatsApp added more context for incoming calls from unsaved numbers, including whether the number is from another country and whether the caller shares any groups with the user. The two-step verification change replaces the previous six-digit PIN with a longer password, while passkeys remain available through Settings > Account > Passkeys.

For users, the changes strengthen protection against account takeovers while making secure sign-in more convenient. Combining stronger credentials, multi-device passkeys and richer caller information also gives users more control over both account access and suspicious incoming calls.

Password-plus Passkeys
Hybrid authentication models combine stronger memorized credentials with device-based passkeys, creating openings for security platforms that balance takeover resistance with low-friction access.
Multi-device Identity
Expanded passkey registration across operating systems reflects rising demand for portable digital identity systems that work consistently across personal device ecosystems.
Contextual Caller Trust
Richer metadata for unknown calls enables messaging and communications services to embed real-time risk signals directly into everyday user interactions.

Where This Applies

Cybersecurity
Account protection vendors can benefit from demand for authentication tools that reduce phishing, SIM-swap and credential-stuffing risks without adding heavy user burden.
Mobile Messaging
Messaging platforms are evolving into secure identity gateways where account access, contact trust and fraud prevention become core competitive features.
Digital Identity
Passkey adoption across consumer apps strengthens the market for interoperable identity infrastructure tied to biometrics, devices and passwordless standards.
