The 'Themis' device is a specially designed solution for use within public spaces like the classroom that would work to continuously monitor for offensive language.
The smart speaker-like device works by being positioned in a space and will monitor for racial slurs, aggressive language and bullying thanks to artificial intelligence (AI) technology inside. The unit would then respond to the person by noting their comment or even sounding an alarm that would last for two-minutes to further draw attention to the language used.
The 'Themis' device is the design work of Zinah Ahmad Issa of the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation who commented on the device saying, "Typically designed for social settings like offices and classrooms, the main motive of designing this product is to hold people accountable in an empathetic sense.”
