Shigeru Ban Architects and AMBK Designed a Surgical Center for Ukraine

In the midst of the Russian-Ukrainian war, Ukraine's largest hospital, which is located in Lviv, founds itself in urgent need of a surgical center. To answer this need and aid the country in its survival, Shigeru Ban Architects collaborated with local studio AMBK on a proposed expansion.
The renderings include a six-story building that the architects are planning to construct with cross-laminated timber (CLT). Shigeru Ban Architects and AMBK also tapped the Swiss engineering studio Hermann Blume in order to avoid the use of metal joints in the surgical center.
This is not the first time Shigeru Ban Architects showcases solidarity with Ukraine to design, a previous instance being the affordable panel-type housing system called Styrofoam Housing System (SHS). These partnerships showcase the dedication of contemporary architects to enhance reconstruction and humanitarian efforts in war-torn countries.
