Streetwear Ballet Redesigns

Zac Posen Dresses Miami City Ballet in GapStudio Stretch

Miami City Ballet will stage Jerome Robbins's 'Opus Jazz' in clothing that looks closer to an off-duty wardrobe, helping the cast move through the ballet with a present-day edge rather than a period look. GapStudio's Zac Posen designed the update, the first authorized redo of the ballet's stage costumes since its premiere.

Posen built each of the 16 looks around the dancer wearing it, so the piece reads less like a uniformed revival and more like a room full of distinct personalities. GapStudio's Infinity Stretch denim gives the choreography room to lunges and jumps, turning a fabric tied to everyday dressing into something that can keep up onstage.

For brands, the collaboration turns the convergence of performance apparel and familiar basics into a design brief. Heritage reworks have more reason to show how a look helps the wearer move, rather than simply updating the archive.
