Cognition, the San Francisco-based AI coding startup behind the autonomous software engineering agent Devin, announced a $1 billion funding round that values the company at $26 billion. The investment marks another step in the company’s rapid growth following Devin’s debut in 2024 and rising enterprise adoption of AI coding agents.
Cognition said Devin can plan and execute software engineering tasks with minimal supervision and has been deployed across enterprise environments. The company highlighted customer results including helping Mercedes-Benz reduce an eight-month legacy project to eight days and automatically fixing 70% of security vulnerabilities at a Latin American bank. Cognition also integrated Windsurf’s SWE-1.6 model into its product suite following its acquisition of the AI code editing company and reported that Devin now writes 89% of Cognition’s internal codebase.
For developers and IT leaders, Devin represents a shift toward AI systems that automate software execution while allowing engineers to focus on higher-level architecture and problem solving.
