American voter ID laws have come under fire recently for being discriminatory, leading to the creation of the hilarious and strangely profound Sarah Silverman 'Let My People Vote 2012' video. Though marred by profanity and crude jokes, the video does make an incredibly legitimate point: these laws are not allowing legitimate Americans to vote and are discouraging potential voters looking to get involved.
The justification offered by some states on their voter ID laws concerns voter fraud. However, the ways in which the situation is being handled has been incredibly poorly executed. Certain forms of ID, such as student cards, veteran cards, etc. are not allowed as legitimate forms, whereas firearm permits are allowed as voting ID. Silverman makes the hilarious and insightful critique that should students be armed, they would be in a better position to be able to vote in the upcoming election.
