The Sammontalo Community Centre is a Multi-Use Civic Building in Finland

The Sammontalo Community Centre is a public building in Lappeenranta, Finland, designed by NERVIN architecture to consolidate multiple community services within a single structure. The project brings together a daycare, preschool, comprehensive school, public library, youth facilities, sports spaces, and student welfare services under one roof. The building spans approximately 12,000 square metres and was developed through an open architectural competition to serve the Sammonlahti district as a shared civic campus. Its elongated form creates a clear organizational framework while allowing different user groups to operate simultaneously.

The architecture divides the site into an urban-facing edge and a softer, park-oriented zone that connects to outdoor play and sports areas. A base of brick columns supports upper volumes articulated with continuous ribbon windows, giving the building a grounded yet open presence. Interior spaces are arranged along a central circulation axis that links courtyards and shared areas, with extensive use of timber and brick to create visual continuity throughout the building.
