These recycled shipping containers were turned into an animal shelter thanks to the Ghetto2Garden initiative. The Santo Domingo based project was created in partnership with Colectivo Revark architectural group and the Practivistas Dominicana Program. The multilevel pet shelter also utilizes materials like shipping pallets, used tires, plastic tanks and plywood.
Originally the shelter was intended to house 40 dogs and six cats, and has since expanded to 50 dogs and ten cats. The recycled shipping containers also make use of solar and wind power generators, a rain harvesting system and an organic waste management biodigester. The eco animal abode is encased in a metal grid. The upcycled containers have a room for the pets to rest, sleep and play.
