Seasoning sachets and sauce are important components of ramen packaging and product design student Holly Grounds is reimagining the way instant noodles are prepared and packaged. The edible, spice-infused wrapper is made from a flavorless biofilm that can be assembled from a few simple ingredients like potato starch, glycerin and water. Once heat-sealed, the film helps to keep wrapped noodles from going stale but contact with boiling water turns the protective packaging into a seasoned broth.
Studded with seeds, the innovative ramen packaging design resembles a bagel when wrapped up, especially since the dried ramen disks are formed into circular rather than rectangular shapes.
Going beyond packaging that's biodegradable or recyclable, creators and brands are looking into zero-waste solutions, especially ones that dissolve and disappear to eliminate waste completely.
