Volkswagen recently announced that its race teams will be powered by electric motors in the future. The company outlined its commitment by stating that it will either produce electric race cars or no race cars.
Volkswagen also states that it intends to power the cars in its race teams using the electric-oriented MEB platform, which the company developed. The automotive company has been slowly moving toward this and it previously showcased the ID.R as the brand's main racing car of the future.
Often times, auto manufacturers use racing as a test ground to try out different designs and promote their vehicles. Electric race cars will allow the brand to experiment with future technologies it could implement in its consumer vehicles.
