Proactive Hearing Assistant is a Audio Prototype for Isolating Speech

Proactive Hearing Assistant is a research prototype developed by the University of Washington that uses on-device artificial intelligence to isolate conversational voices amid background noise. The system integrates specialized microphone arrays and machine-learning models that analyze patterns of turn-taking in speech to detect and filter the wearer’s conversation partners. Headphones built with this technology allow desired voices to be emphasized while suppressing unrelated ambient sound.

The prototype is configured to track up to four other speakers in real time without manual input, using adaptive filtering to distinguish between overlapping voices in crowded acoustic environments. The design combines over-ear headphone hardware with integrated AI processing, allowing continuous sound analysis and selective voice extraction. The underlying AI models monitor speech cadence and apply dynamic suppression of non-target audio sources. Current iterations of the prototype include additional microphones and hardware components to support the real-time isolation process.
