Persephone is Developing a "Super Pill" Probiotic With Stool Samples

Persephone is a biotech startup that is dedicated to “building a library of the human microbiome.” The startup aims to provide consumers with a list of life forms that help with digestion, fighting disease, and general health. By analyzing an individual's unique set of microorganisms, we can understand what is potentially different and what that can mean for their overall health, and Persephone is one of the first companies to analyze these microbes in order to build a precise map of the entire gut biome.

Persephone collects stool samples from a large number of individuals that are both healthy and suffering from medical conditions. “As we get older, our diet changes, we get ill, we take antibiotics… and the microbiome starts to disappear,” said Stephanie Culler, co-founder of Persephone. “We’re trying to round up all the right microbes: a one size fits all, trained on our data, consensus set of organisms that everybody needs — one super pill that’s a new category of probiotics.”
