If you live in Tokyo (or have access to the Internet), a new shop called Pass the Baton lets you give your old things away to other people in a novel and sentimental way.
Pass the Baton's concept is to preserve the personal culture attached to each item--its backstory. Each item in the shop contains a picture of the owner and a personal story, like how the owner came to own that item, how it's graced the owner's life, or expressions of best wishes to the next owner.
