The Paper Cut Letters art series is a commentary on modern society's reliance on technology to correspond with strangers, colleagues and loved ones. While text messaging, social media sites and similar developments have made it easier and more convenient to stay in touch, it is often devoid of the heart and soul that has always been part of handwritten correspondence. The Paper Cut Letters series accentuates this personal quality by turning these letters into art pieces worthy of being hung on walls.
Created by Oakland-based artist Annie Vought, the Paper Cut Letters series is comprised of carefully cutout handwritten text that is beautifully delicate and still readable. An elaborate investigation into the properties of writing and expression, Vought writes, "Penmanship, word choice and spelling all contribute to possible narratives about who that person is and what they are like."
