Laughter is holistic, free and wonderfully contagious. Children seem to laugh with more ease and abandon than grown-ups, but there’s no age limit for laughing. Laughter may also be the best medicine for SAD.
SAD stands for Seasonal Affective Disorder and is sometimes referred to as the ‘winter blues.’ It's common in the northern latitudes this time of year. Scientists say that SAD is caused by a lack of sunlight, which decreases the amount of Vitamin D available to the body. Without the D, serotonin levels are lowered and people become lethargic, gain weight and can’t ever seem to get enough sleep. But a generous dose of laughter can help.
Laughter boosts the immune system, lowers blood pressure, decreases stress, moves our lymph, and increases detoxifying oxygenation.
Comedian Milton Berle once said, “Laughter is an instant vacation.”
