BASF Develops Aroma Ingredients for Evolving Regulations

Safe-by-design fragrances are bringing safety, sustainability and regulatory considerations into the earliest stages of aroma ingredient development. BASF’s approach is demonstrated through Micadelva, a non-allergenic alternative to orange terpenes that delivers a fresh orange-peel profile with extended freshness. The ingredient contains 80% renewable carbon, is readily biodegradable and is expected to have a carbon footprint below two kilograms of CO₂e per kilogram. BASF also evaluates factors such as mutagenicity, endocrine activity and persistence before advancing ingredient candidates.

This approach can help fragrance brands prepare for changing regulatory requirements while maintaining creative flexibility and scent performance. For BASF, the Future-Proof-Palette strengthens its position as a supplier capable of addressing safety, environmental and formulation needs simultaneously. Ingredients such as Micadelva may also reduce the need for later reformulation, helping customers develop products with longer-term regulatory viability across global markets.
