The photo book London Tattoos by Alex MacNaughton features snapshots of inked-up people from all walks of life. Instead of focusing on just the tattoos themselves, the project is intended to show the way that the ink is a part of the person who has it etched onto their body. While MacNaughton does treat the emblems as art, each portrait tells a story of the tattoo, the meaning behind it and the person sporting it.
Each Londoner has one full-length photo taken of them, fully clothed, and then various close-ups are taken of their body art. The photographer hopes that the book will change some of the perceptions people have about tattooed individuals and will open up the possibility of exploring the personal significance that the body ink has.
London Tattoos by Alex MacNaughton is an interesting look at a subculture of people who have found something so special to them that they want to etch it onto their body for the rest of their days.
