SeaGate Announced its Fourth-Generation LaCie Rugged SSD
Colin Smith — September 17, 2025 — Tech
The LaCie Rugged SSD4 is an external solid-state drive offering up to 2,800 MB/s transfer speeds over Thunderbolt 3 and up to 1,000 MB/s via USB-C (USB 3.2 Gen 2×2), enabling direct capture and playback of Apple ProRes 4K RAW video at 30 fps. Available in 1 TB, 2 TB, and 4 TB capacities, the drive supports real-time editing on macOS and Windows systems without additional caching or proxy workflows. The SSD4 includes both a Thunderbolt 3 port and a USB-C port for broad compatibility with laptops and cameras, and it uses a fanless design to minimize noise during sustained transfers. The unit’s internal NVMe SSD is encased in a small footprint (88 × 60 × 22 mm) aluminum chassis to optimize heat dissipation and maintain consistent performance under heavy workloads.
Building on the Rugged series’ legacy, the SSD4 meets IP67 dust and water resistance standards, survives drops from up to two meters, and endures a 3-ton car crush test. The drive ships with LaCie Toolkit software for automated backups, RAID mirroring, and optional AES-256 hardware encryption. Pricing starts at approximately $399 for the 1 TB model, positioning the SSD4 as a mid-range option for content creators who require portable, durable storage capable of handling high-bitrate video. Its combination of ruggedization, dual-interface connectivity, and sustained high throughput makes it suitable for field production, location shooting, and on-the-go post-production workflows.
