Kurono Diver’s Watch Places a 35mm Timepiece Inside a Diving Case

— March 6, 2026 — Fashion
The Kurono Diver’s watch is a new timepiece from independent Japanese watchmaker Hajime Asaoka that rethinks the architecture of a traditional dive watch. The design centers on a compact 35-millimeter cushion-shaped automatic watch head that can be worn alone for everyday use or inserted into a larger 46-millimeter stainless-steel diving case when underwater durability is required. This modular structure allows the watch to shift between a dress-style daily watch and a functional diving instrument.

A defining feature of the design is the absence of a crown, a component often considered a weak point in dive watches. Instead, the watch relies on the efficiency of its automatic movement once the time is set. When sealed inside the outer case using a dedicated tool, the watch can withstand depths of up to 300 meters, while the outer case also includes a unidirectional bezel with a 60-minute scale for timing dives. The limited release is priced at $2,700 USD and is distributed through a global ballot system.

Trend Themes

  1. Modular Luxury Watches — This approach of interchangeable watch heads and protective outer cases enables personalized form-factor transitions between everyday elegance and specialized functionality, challenging single-purpose product paradigms.
  2. Crownless Mechanical Design — By eliminating the traditional crown and relying on sealed automatic movements, designers are reducing mechanical vulnerability and redefining how consumers perceive durability and serviceability in wristwatches.
  3. Dual-mode Timekeeping — Compact dress watch modules that transform into certified dive instruments create new expectations for multi-environment performance within a single ownership experience.

Industry Implications

  1. Watchmaking — Independent and heritage watchmakers can explore hybrid architectures that combine micro-engineering with modular accessories to unlock premium lifecycle value and differentiation.
  2. Luxury Goods Retail — Limited-release, ballot-distributed timepieces paired with modular cases present opportunities to reframe scarcity-based commerce and upsell convertible product ecosystems.
  3. Diving and Marine Equipment — Integration of compact precision instruments into robust protective housings suggests a pathway to cross-pollinate horology with professional-grade underwater tooling and certification standards.
