Costa Rica Digitizes Its Natural and Cultural Landmarks

Costa Rica is expanding interactive heritage maps with Discover Costa Rica, a free bilingual platform that brings the country’s natural, cultural, historical, and scientific information into one digital experience. Developed by essential COSTA RICA with government and University of Costa Rica partners, the map lets users explore national parks, volcanoes, islands, waterfalls, protected areas, biodiversity, and cultural sites. It also highlights Costa Rica’s maritime territory using research-backed information.

The platform combines destination discovery with education, giving tourists, students, researchers, and educators access to credible information through an intuitive visual format. For Costa Rica’s tourism sector, the map can encourage travelers to discover destinations beyond familiar attractions while strengthening the country’s identity around nature and conservation. Making the resource available globally in Spanish and English can also support destination marketing, inspire future travel, and give tourism organizations a centralized tool for communicating Costa Rica’s diverse heritage.
