HUID is a New Start-Up That Uses Cellulose from Onion Skins

HUID, a Scottish brand, has been announced as a new company specializing in sustainable alternatives to fossil fuel-derived plastic products. Notably, the company achieves this feat by using onion skins, utilizing the vegetable's antimicrobial properties to extend the life of perishable foods. HUID extracts the cellulose from the onion skins and fuses it with a biopolymer blend, resulting in a film that rivals plastic in strength.

The innovative concept has received significant support from the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS), operated by the University of Strathclyde. It is a vital component of the High-Value Manufacturing (HVM) Catapult initiative. The Advanced Materials Research Laboratory (AMRL) at the University of Strathclyde is conducting extensive testing on materials derived from onions, which are the foundation of this promising development.
