Brick Garden Extensions

The Hops House Extension by Alex Jackson Expands a Former Brewery Home

The Hops House extension by architect Alex Jackson adds a new kitchen, dining area and living space to the ground floor of a converted brewery house in Sussex. The addition sits along the garden edge with a simple pitched roof that continues the line of the original structure. The exterior uses brickwork that matches the existing building, and full-width sliding glass doors open directly to the garden to increase daylight and create a clear connection to the outdoor space. The internal plan removes former partitions to form a single open volume supported by a straightforward structural frame.

The reworked layout improves circulation by placing utility and storage zones to the side of the new main space. The roof structure is left visible internally, and the glazing spans the entire elevation to extend views across the site. The extension maintains the house’s original scale while providing a larger and more functional family living area.
