German photographer Freya Najade traveled to Hidropark, a recreational area in Kiev, Ukraine, to photograph her latest series of the same name. Najade explains, “I was drawn to the people and activities—the fun fair, the table tennis where the elderly met and socialized, the beach life, the gym where people of all classes and ages trained.”
Despite the political strife and economic uncertainty currently plaguing Ukraine, Najade's photos are cheerful and relaxed. She captures the ways in which the culture perseveres within a turbulent social climate.
The photos in Hidropark vary, from a shirtless line of older men happily striding into the water, to a couple of women decked out in Hawaiian-style outfits. One thing that is immediately noticeable, however, is the jarring contrast between the serene, leisurely moments captured on Najade's Contax 645, and the dilapidated surroundings in which they occur.
