Guerrilla Marketing Marathon Activations

Speedo Had Strong Presence at a Marathon in Toronto

Speedo staged a playful guerrilla marketing activation at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon that placed Speedo-clad runners among the race crowds and reinforced the message that swimming can serve as a low-impact training complement to running and endurance sports.

Speedo's clever guerrilla marketing campaign combined disruptive out-of-home elements, like posters and a digital billboard takeover. The unexpected sight of swimmers at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon setting created a memorable, shareable moment that stood out against the usual race-day advertising.

Tera Maloney, member of Canada’s 2012 Olympic Swim Team and Head of Marketing at Speedo Canada, shares about the playful campaign: “The best exercise is the one you can do for a lifetime. For many people, that’s swimming. It’s a full-body workout that’s easy on the joints. All the endurance, with a lot less wear and tear. With this activation, we wanted to bring a little fun and unexpected energy to marathon weekend, while reminding runners that swimming can be a great complement to their training. We’re not here to take anything away from running, rather we’re here to celebrate another way to build endurance, stay active and enjoy movement.”
