What you are looking at isn't a Hollywood special effect. It's the Guangdong Museum, China's newest public museum, which opened its doors to patrons back in May of 2010.
Designed by the Hong Kong-based firm Rocco Design Architects Ltd., the Guangdong Museum is five stories tall, covers 66 980 square meters (721 000 square feet), houses over 130 000 exhibits, and can be found in the center of Guangzhou's business district.
Inspired by Chinese treasure boxes, the design of the Guangdong Museum is not only formidable, but highly functional. The slits found along the sides of the Guangdong Museum serve to let in natural light, illuminating various exhibits found within the museum while saving tons of money and electricity in the process.
