Polytag and DataLase introduced a joint solution that enables GS1-compliant QR codes to be applied to challenging packaging substrates, featuring laser-reactive coatings and Polytag's QR code management platform. The collaboration targets films, foils, metals and coated surfaces, where applying advanced QR codes has traditionally been more difficult, while supporting regulatory compliance and connected packaging initiatives.
The solution applies laser-reactive coatings during production, with a laser activating pigments on the packaging line to create permanent QR codes without additional inks or consumables. Designed to integrate with existing retail supply chains, the codes can carry batch, expiry and serial number data while linking consumers to dynamic product information, care instructions and marketing content.
For brands, the technology expands QR code deployment across more packaging formats while supporting traceability, regulatory readiness and interactive consumer experiences as the industry moves toward Sunrise 2027.

Key Themes Behind This Trend
- Inkless Product Serialization
- Laser-activated codes reduce reliance on inks and consumables while enabling durable item-level identification across complex packaging materials.
- Connected Packaging Data
- Dynamic QR destinations turn physical packs into data-rich consumer touchpoints that support traceability, education, loyalty and post-purchase engagement.
- Regulatory-ready Labeling
- GS1-compliant digital markings provide a scalable path for brands managing batch, expiry and serial data ahead of emerging retail standards.
Where This Applies
- Packaging
- Advanced substrate-compatible marking expands digital labeling capabilities for films, foils, metals and coated surfaces previously difficult to encode.
- Retail
- Supply chain visibility improves when standardized QR codes connect inventory, compliance and consumer-facing information within existing store and distribution systems.
- Consumer Goods
- Brand owners gain new packaging-based communication channels that combine product authentication, usage guidance and personalized marketing without redesigning core formats.
