The humble ball bearing is one of Leonardo Da Vinci's less celebrated inventions but one of the most important; how, his invention is set to take the next step in the form of a greaseless ball bearing. The idea here is to reduce the friction between two rotating pieces.
The design is the work of Japanese company Coo Space, which has come up with a way to space ball bearings out in order to reduce friction, but without necessitating an extra cage to hold things in place.
Now the workings of ball bearings might not sound super glamorous, but they are extremely important when you consider that pretty much every moving machine counts on the humble ball bearing as one of its fundamental components. This greaseless ball bearing could therefore help speed up the performances of machines small and large.
