Google SMILY is a new tool that uses a reverse image search to look for cancerous cells, SMILY stands for Similar Medical Images Like Yours. The system operates with someone using a patient's sample, which is a high-resolution slide containing a dyed sample. Google SMILY allows users to select certain portions of the slide that they are more interested in. Users can see other images that are similar to the one they are looking at. Lastly, the program can alert to features in the sample like fused glands or tumor precursors.
Initial studies were done where doctors used the tool to determine pathologies. The tool was well used and researchers indicated that the tool was favored as opposed to previous methods. The use of the system also did not result in reduced diagnostic accuracy.
