Forest Studio is a 967-square-foot two-level workspace completed in 2024 on a wooded peninsula overlooking Saanich Inlet near Victoria, British Columbia. Designed by Little Giant as its own studio, the building is elevated above the sloping site and accessed by a raised walkway inspired by the experience of entering a treehouse. A recessed grey-tinted concrete base anchors the lower level into the terrain, while cantilevered beams and parallel trusses support a floating upper volume wrapped in charcoal-stained cedar siding and screening that blends with the surrounding cedar and Douglas fir forest.
The upper floor contains an open studio, kitchenette, powder room, Murphy bed and a balcony extending into the tree canopy. A flexible lower level functions as a meeting room and can be reconfigured for residential or creative uses. Interior finishes include hemlock ceilings, travertine countertops and light-toned materials selected to maximize natural daylight. The gabled structure references Pacific Northwest timber mills and coastal canneries while preserving the existing tree canopy and minimizing disturbance to the landscape.
