Climate-Resilient Heritage Vineyards

Varvaglione Tests 500-Plus Rare Grapes for Climate Adaptation

Varvaglione 1921 is turning its newly acquired Casino Nitti estate into a testing ground for climate-resilient viticulture through its Vineyard of Biodiversity. Developed with researchers from the University of Milan and University of Salento, the experimental vineyard contains more than 500 minor and Balkan grape varieties, particularly grapes originating from the Caucasus and Mediterranean regions. Researchers will examine how rare and ancient varieties adapt to changing Mediterranean conditions while also exploring new rootstocks. The estate uses organic practices, including microalgae and microorganisms for natural soil nourishment.

The project gives Varvaglione a research-driven approach to protecting wine production against changing growing conditions while preserving underused grape genetics. Commercially, successful varieties or rootstocks could support more resilient future vineyards and differentiated wines. The Casino Nitti acquisition also expands Varvaglione’s portfolio while strengthening its positioning around biodiversity, sustainability, and long-term regional winemaking.
