Digital Fortune Gadgets

gokux Created the eFortune Cookie with a 1.54-Inch E-Paper Display

gokux developed the eFortune Cookie as a handheld fortune generator combining a 3D-printed shell with a Seeed Xiao ESP32-S3 Plus microcontroller and 1.54-inch e-paper display. The device activates through motion rather than buttons, displaying randomized fortunes after being shaken. gokux stored more than 3,000 fortunes directly on the device without requiring Wi-Fi connectivity or companion apps.

The eFortune Cookie also includes dice rolling and coin flipping modes controlled through side-mounted buttons and shake gestures. An MPU-6050 accelerometer detects movement inputs across all interaction modes, while the low-power e-paper display maintains readability under different lighting conditions. The project combines compact electronics with a curved enclosure modeled after the folded shape of a traditional fortune cookie. gokux presented the eFortune Cookie as an independent maker project built from consumer electronic components and 3D-printed parts. The device operates entirely offline with preloaded fortunes and onboard motion-based controls.

Offline Smart Devices
A resurgence of self-contained gadgets that store content and logic locally enables connected experiences without reliance on cloud services or continuous internet access.
Gesture-driven Interfaces
Gesture and motion detection are replacing buttons for intuitive interactions, creating compact products that respond to natural movements instead of traditional input methods.
Low-power E-paper Displays
Ultra-low-power e-paper screens are enabling always-readable, battery-friendly products that prioritize longevity and outdoor legibility over high-refresh-rate visuals.

Who This Affects Most

Consumer Electronics
Compact, offline consumer devices combining microcontrollers, sensors, and 3D-printed enclosures are redefining product form factors and lifecycle energy requirements.
Gift and Novelty Retail
Personalized, tactile novelty items with embedded electronics are shifting buyer expectations toward interactive keepsakes with long battery life and offline functionality.
Embedded Systems Manufacturing
Small-scale manufacturing of MCU-based boards and modular sensor packages is opening opportunities for turnkey, low-cost products that leverage motion control and local content storage.
