Innocent is testing ginger shots in Notpla's seaweed-based Ooho pods, giving shot drinkers a package they can swallow after finishing the drink. The biodegradable wrapper replaces a bottle for this trial and leaves no container behind to throw away.
The pilot began with residents of Nobottle, a Northamptonshire hamlet of 30 people, before moving to a public test in a nearby city. In a 321-person survey, 78% of respondents who had tried the pods said they would buy them if they were available today.
A seaweed pod that disappears after a quick shot turns packaging into part of the serving, which fits a drink meant to be finished in one go. Moving a format already used at marathons and festivals into packaged beverages widens Notpla's reach and gives Innocent a cleaner way to trial circular packaging in everyday use.

What Makes This Trend Stand Out
- Edible Beverage Packaging
- Swallowable wrappers transform single-serve drinks into zero-waste formats, creating room for packaging that becomes part of the consumption experience.
- Seaweed-based Materials
- Marine-derived biomaterials are expanding beyond foodservice and events, offering brands renewable alternatives to plastic bottles, sachets, and films.
- Micro-trial Sustainability Pilots
- Small-community product tests provide fast feedback on circular packaging concepts, reducing risk before wider retail or urban deployment.
Sectors Adopting This
- Functional Beverages
- Shot-based wellness drinks are well suited to edible containers, since compact servings can pair convenience with visible sustainability benefits.
- Sustainable Packaging
- Compostable and edible material innovators can reshape packaging supply chains as consumer brands seek practical replacements for single-use plastic.
- Food Technology
