Somewhere in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, scientists are shaking their heads over the fiasco that happened Friday and Saturday at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center. Was it the full moon? The bratwurst? The amino acids in the Thanksgiving turkey? The Beatles recordings played backwards? No one knows for sure.
All Dr Kenneth Merkitch, the on-call obstetrician-gynecologist at Gundersen, knows is he delivered four sets of twins in 24 hours, plus one. "I don't think I have ever delivered two sets of twins on a call day," Merkitch said puzzled. "It was hard to believe that everything was coming in twos, but after a while you're up all night, you might as well keep delivering babies," he said. "It's something I don't think I'll see again."
