Debris-Reporting Wildlife Apps

This App Lets Volunteers Contribute to Wildlife-Saving Projects

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's marine debris program is rolling out a brand new wildlife app that is designed to make it easier than ever for environment enthusiasts and volunteers in the states of Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina to go about reporting debris that affects wildlife.

The app, which is dubbed "Tangled in Trash: A Reporting Tool for Wildlife,' makes use of the online platform Anecdata developed by the MDI Biological Laboratory. The app encourages users to document their findings in order to contribute to the storage of data, which in turn represents a huge help for scientists and government natural resources bodies to assess interactions between debris and wildlife and forge solutions to the problem.

In the words of project coordinator Kelly Thorvalson, this wildlife reporting app will "house reported wildlife and marine debris interactions to help users, researchers, wildlife responders, and others identify critical trends and concerns and strategize actionable solutions.”
