Extremely compact apartments are the norm in metropolitan cities like New York. Due to a population that seems to continuously grow, and costs of rent that are behaving likewise, many dwellers have to commit to living in smaller spaces. This, of course, requires some finesse in order to achieve true comfort.
New York-based architect Martin Hopp recently showcased how designers tackle compact apartments. In order to tackle his dark and irregularly shaped dwelling in New York's Chelsea neighborhood, Hopp "used lots of white and created clever 'micro elements' like a retractable dining table," a built-in white sofa, ample smart storage spaces, among other things. In doing so, the architect was able to emphasize lightness and brightness in the 700-square-foot apartment, while not compromising on important functional elements like openness and privacy.
