Four Species Wood Tables

The Color Gradient Table is Designed by Luis Gimeno Using Natural Tones

The color gradient table is a side table designed by Luis Gimeno that sequences four wood species across its surface to produce a tonal progression using only the natural color of each material. The composition moves from beech through chestnut and European oak, finishing with black-stained chestnut.

Each section retains its own grain and character while the overall arrangement transitions from pale warm tones to deeper, richer ones across the full width of the piece. No applied color or surface treatment drives the gradient; the shift comes entirely from the inherent tones of the selected species. The table features softened edges along its perimeter, which reduce visual weight despite the piece's substantial mass. The joins between sections are precise and ordered, with each wood species occupying a distinct band across the tabletop.

Natural Material Gradients
Aesthetic transitions produced by sequencing different wood species highlight opportunities to create color variation without pigments, enabling product lines that rely on material selection rather than surface coatings.
Species-based Design
Designs that emphasize the unique grain and tone of each species present possibilities for curated multi-material compositions that celebrate inherent material character as a central design language.
Visible Joinery Precision
Meticulous, ordered joins between distinct material bands illustrate potential for precision fabrication and digital cutting techniques to produce complex, multi-material assemblies with tight tolerances.

Who This Affects Most

Furniture Design
Contemporary furniture lines can leverage natural tone sequencing to differentiate products through material storytelling and reduced reliance on surface finishes.
Architectural Interiors
Interior environments that incorporate banded-material surfaces offer new aesthetic strategies for zonal definition and tactile contrast within built spaces.
Sustainable Materials Sourcing
Supply chains focused on diverse timber species may see demand for responsibly sourced assortments tailored to color and grain palettes, altering procurement and certification priorities.
