Kit Kat is known for creating many unique chocolate wafer bars in Japan and its newest creation is a limited-edition chocolate bar that's been aged in whisky barrels from Scotland. The Whisky Barrel Aged bars are made with cacao nibs that have been aged for 180 days in special barrels once used for aging whisky in Islay, Scotland. As part of this process, the whisky barrels were rotated weekly to ensure that all the cacao nibs were properly infused with flavor. The end of this barrel-aging process is said to enhance the cacao with a "smoky peatiness."
As barrel-aging is no longer exclusive to the alcohol industry, food and beverage brands are creating a variety of interesting products that have increased artisanal appeal.
